abstract
The Associate Laboratory for Sustainability and Technology in Inland Regions SusTEC results from the association between the Mountain Research Centre CIMO and the Research Centre in Digitalization and Intelligent Robotics CeDRI, both research units based at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança IPB, therefore an Associate Laboratory totally based on the polytechnic system. Both Centres were awarded the classification of “Excellent” in the last Research Units evaluation carried out by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology FCT 2017/2018, which together with their highly recognized past of scientific excellence, and given proofs in innovation and technology transfer, makes this Associate Laboratory highly enhancer of regional development, while maintaining the national and international projection.
The SusTEC Associate Laboratory intends to approach in a holistic, transversal and multidisciplinary way, and in total alignment with the national and European research and innovation policies and agendas, the societal challenges promoting the sustainable development of inland regions. SusTEC is organized in 3 thematic lines TL: TL1 - Natural Resources, Agriculture and Climate Change; TL2 - Food and Bio-based Solutions; and TL3 - Innovative and Tech-Based SMEs. The three thematic lines will contribute synergistically to: i improve agricultural systems and the management of natural resources following an integrated view with climate change issues; ii increase interest in the bio-based economy, namely by contributing to the consolidation of a zero-waste economy and to the creation of new value chains; and iii promote the modernization of the industrial sector by applying emerging digital and clean technologies, and green and sustainable processes, aligned with the digital transformation and circular economy.
The SusTEC integrates 96 researchers in a multidisciplinary team benefiting from the complementarity and synergy between the CIMO and CeDRI researchers in the transdisciplinary areas foreseen for the Associate Laboratory and corroborated by a past of successful cooperation in several national and international projects. The research team will also be reinforced based on the presented plan for the hiring of career researchers, with emphasis on new talents attraction, with this group reaching a share of 11.8% of the total SusTEC researchers, corroborating the structuring effect for the region where it is located.
O LA SusTEC – Laboratório Associado para a Sustentabilidade e TECnologia em Regiões do Interior, resulta da associação entre o Centro de Investigação de Montanha CIMO e o Centro de Investigação em Digitalização e Robótica Inteligente CeDRI, ambos sediados no Instituto Politécnico de Bragança IPB, sendo, portanto, um LA totalmente baseado no sistema politécnico. Ambos os Centros obtiveram a classificação de “Excelente” na última avaliação realizada pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia FCT às Unidades de Investigação 2017/2018, o que juntamente com o seu passado de elevado reconhecimento da excelência científica, com provas dadas na inovação e transferência de tecnologia, torna este LA altamente potenciador do desenvolvimento regional, mantendo a sua projeção nacional e internacional.
O LA SusTEC pretende abordar de uma forma holística, transversal e multidisciplinar, e em total alinhamento com as políticas e agendas nacionais e europeias de investigação e inovação, os desafios societais promotores do desenvolvimento sustentado das regiões do interior. O LA está organizado em 3 linhas temáticas TL: TL1 - Recursos Naturais, Agricultura e Mudanças Climáticas; TL2 - Soluções Alimentares e de base biológica; e TL3 - PMEs Inovadoras e de Base Tecnológica. As três linhas contribuirão de forma sinérgica para: i melhorar os sistemas agrícolas e a gestão dos recursos naturais numa visão integrada com as questões das alterações climáticas; ii aumentar o interesse pela economia de base biológica, nomeadamente contribuindo para a consolidação de uma economia de desperdício zero e para a criação novas cadeias de valor; e iii fomentar a modernização do setor industrial, aplicando tecnologias digitais emergentes e limpas e processos verdes e sustentáveis, em alinhamento com a transformação digital e economia circular.
O SusTEC é composto por 96 investigadores, resultando numa equipa multidisciplinar que beneficiará da complementaridade e sinergia existente entre os investigadores do CIMO e CeDRI nas áreas transdisciplinares previstas e corroborada por um passado de cooperação bem-sucedido em vários projetos nacionais e internacionais. A equipa de investigação será ainda reforçada com base no plano apresentado para a contratação de investigadores de carreira, com ênfase na atração de novos talentos, passando este grupo a representar 11.8% do total de investigadores do SusTEC, evidenciando o efeito estruturante para a região onde se insere.
