The strategic plan of the Applied Management Research Unit UNIAG intends to promote a research centre of excellence in the area of tourism, focused on the following objectives:
i promotion of regional and cross-border development regarding the strategic location of the centre;
ii creation of international partnerships to collect, preserve and disseminate the heritage of the Northern region of Portugal and its integration in international global networks that allow to increase the added value of material, natural and cultural heritage;
iii promotion of innovative solutions in the management of public, private and third sector institutions to enhance the sustainable development of efficient and effective public policies, the economic performance and competitiveness of the business environment, and the social well-being;
iv the development of entrepreneurial capacity in order to attract people and firms with high technological and entrepreneurial potential that, through the transfer of scientific and technological knowledge, reinforce the patrimonial and cultural wealth of the region through smart solutions; and,
v the development of ICT mechanisms and models to promote the modernization of infrastructures and their adaptation to the digital age.
The promotion of tourism in the northern region of Portugal is vital regarding the current economic situation. It can be presented as an enhancer for job creation, wealth, social cohesion and society well being, preserving the identity and collective memories. It is intended to be, simultaneously, inclusive, creative, innovative, qualified and capable of responding to the challenges of inclusion, internationalisation, globalisation and emerging technological transformations. These objectives are aligned with the current European strategy for the competitiveness of the Portuguese regions and economy and the creation of human capital, sustainable development and social and territorial cohesion.
The plan of activities for the period 2018-2022 is organized into 7 major groups:
i contributions for progress and applications of knowledge;
ii advanced training and scientific initiation of young students;
iii promotion of scientific, technological and knowledge transfer culture; iv organization of conferences, colloquia, seminars and workshops;
v preservation, curatorship and dissemination of data and results open science policy;
vi actions of particular relevance to society scientific, technological, cultural, artistic, social or with economic nature; and,
vii internationalisation, partnerships and networking with other R&D units.
The activities will be performed by the integrated members from four Polytechnic HEIs located in the North of Portugal and that belong to the Association of Polytechnic Institutes of Northern Portugal APNOR: Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave, Polytechnic Institute of Porto and Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo

A.Contributions for progress and applications of knowledge
Development of new management and business models, in the area of tourism and with a strong component in innovation and ICT, that allow the raising of financial funds applied to the modernization of the current activity and business structure and the creation of new financially sustainable firms that generate employment and wealth. UNIAG, within its national and international research network, intends to develop applied research projects in partnership with the regional business community, associations and municipalities.
B. Advanced training and scientific initiation of young students
Activities of doctoral orientation will be maintained and master students will be encouraged to pursue advanced studies PhD. UNIAG aims to include in all of the scientific projects grants for young researchers.
C. Promotion of scientific, technological and knowledge transfer culture
Technical, technological and scientific competences and skills will be offered through short courses and training in the workplace, consultancy to companies and public institutions, elaboration of market studies. Such knowledge transfer activities will be supported by the design and development of digital platforms with social, academic and business application.
D. Organization of conferences, colloquia, seminars and workshops
Biannual implementation of an international congress on cross-border tourism and regional development to collect and share contributions with a vast international scientific community. The unit will also be responsible for the organization of an annual colloquium that will bring together professionals and researchers in the field of tourism to identify needs and potential solutions to real problems. Thematic seminars, with regular periodicity, will be organised and open to the academic, scientific and expert community.A summer school with renowned researchers will be a reality with the aim to improve the competences of UNIAG members and external young researchers.
E. Preservation, curatorship and dissemination of data and results open science policy
The Terras de Trás-os-Montes Observatory will be maintained and extended to a wider regional scope, giving emphasis to tourism statistical information. The conception of an annual open access scientific journal with international scope in the area of tourism is on UNIAG's agenda. The researchers will continue to disseminate their research results in different scientific events and in journals with international impact.
F. Actions of particular relevance to society scientific, technological, cultural, artistic, social or with economic nature
The unit is focused on applied research projects to promote routes that cross the northern region of Portugal Caminhos de Fátima and Santiago de Compostela as a religious experience and also as sport, health and well being related experiences. Other activities with relevance for the society include studies to analyse the impact of historical centres and classified heritage located in the north of Portugal; projects to identify the need for requalification of historical centres; development of applications for the classification of heritage as world heritage UNESCO; the broad compilation of information regarding immaterial heritage in a book and on digital platforms; projects to study the impact of sport events, music festivals and other events in the region's business environment; and projects to analyze how tourism has contributed to the recovery of traditions and customs and to the use of local resources.
G. Internationalisation, partnerships and networking with other R&D units
It is UNIAG's strategy to maintain the course of the internationalization process, extend its scope to internationally renowned research centres, in the field of tourism, and to integrate collaborative networks with other R&D units. The promotion of such partnerships is enhanced by the submission of international projects with multinational and interdisciplinary teams.
O plano estratégico da Unidade de Investigação Aplicada em Gestão UNIAG pretende promover um centro de investigação de excelência na área do turismo, focado nos seguintes objetivos: i promoção do desenvolvimento regional e transfronteiriço considerando a localização estratégica do centro; ii criação de parcerias internacionais para recolher, preservar e divulgar o património da região Norte de Portugal e a sua integração em redes internacionais que permitam aumentar o valor agregado do património material, natural e cultural; iii promoção de soluções inovadoras na gestão de instituições públicas, privadas e do terceiro setor para melhorar o desenvolvimento sustentável de políticas públicas eficientes e efetivas, o desempenho económico e a competitividade do ambiente empresarial e o bem-estar social; iv o desenvolvimento da capacidade empresarial para atrair pessoas e empresas com alto potencial tecnológico e empresarial que, através da transferência de conhecimento científico e tecnológico, reforcem a riqueza patrimonial e cultural da região através de soluções inteligentes; e v o desenvolvimento de mecanismos e modelos de TIC para promover a modernização das infraestruturas e a sua adaptação à era digital.
A promoção do turismo no Norte de Portugal é vital face à situação económica atual. O turismo pode ser apresentado como um impulsionador da criação de emprego e riqueza, da coesão social e do bem-estar da sociedade, preservando a identidade e as memórias coletivas. Destina-se a ser simultaneamente inclusivo, criativo, inovador, qualificado e capaz de responder aos desafios da inclusão, internacionalização, globalização e transformações tecnológicas emergentes. Estes objetivos estão alinhados com a atual estratégia europeia para a competitividade da economia e das regiões portuguesas e a criação de capital humano, desenvolvimento sustentável e coesão social e territorial.
O plano de atividades para o período 2018-2022 está organizado em 7 grandes grupos: i contribuições para o progresso e aplicações do conhecimento; ii formação avançada e iniciação científica de jovens estudantes; iii promoção da cultura de transferência científica, tecnológica e de conhecimento; iv organização de conferências, colóquios, seminários e workshops; v preservação, curadoria e disseminação de dados e resultados como previsto na política de Ciência Aberta; vi ações de particular relevância para a sociedade, de natureza científica, tecnológica, cultural, artística, social ou económica; e vii internacionalização, parcerias e networking com outras unidades de I&D.
As atividades serão realizadas pelos membros integrados de quatro instituições de ensino superior politécnico localizadas no norte de Portugal e que pertencem à Associação de Politécnicos da Região Norte APNOR: Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave, Instituto Politécnico do Porto e Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo.
