This study aims to carry out a picture of the social economy in Portugal, including the entities
belonging to the sector, the activities and the importance of the sector in the national economy.
Given the growth of the elderly population held a characterization of nursing homes, with special
emphasis on the responses developed by the Santa Casa da Misericordia and profitable entities.
Finally we carried out a comparison of the financial performance of the Santa Casa da Misericordia
and profitable entities for the year 2013. The comparison of the financial performance was
conducted through the medium indicators of expenditures, results and sales per resident. The
results showed that for-profit nursing homes had, on average, more sales and earnings before
interest taxes depreciation and amortization than non-profit nursing homes. On the other hand, nonprofit
nursing homes had, on average, more personnel expenses and net income than the lucrative
nursing homes.
